Spring News!

So much has been going on during spring that I almost don’t know where to start! We have found partnerships with Dulux (paint centre) and Savills (via LandAid) that mean we have been able to paint the centre (along with MANY volunteer hours – thank you) and we will be getting a costed feasibility study for a new heating system and lift. This will mean we can apply for funding from bodies like the National Lottery for these essential and expensive works. We are still on the lookout for local architects who would like to get involved in shaping our proposed coffee shop/bar area. Please get in touch if you would like to volunteer.

Following hot on the heels of our Coronation Garden Party and Christmas Fayre, new EWCA member, Anna, is spearheading our summer solstice event. It will take place on the 22nd June 15:00 – 19:00. Join us from 15:00 – 17:00 for summer fayre activities and from 17:00 – 19:00 for a family quiz! Details for the event will be in a newsletter special edition. Thank you Anna (and all the EWCA team) and watch this space!

To go with a newly painted centre we have a new brand specifically for the centre itself. We thought it important to give the centre a separate identity to EWCA as we want it to be facing forward, rather than linking to the struggles of the past. The EWCA team will continue to run the centre as a volunteer led community charity. Watch this space for the launch of the new Wells Community Centre website, where you will be able to see what’s on and room availability. We will be taking ad hoc bookings soon and will need volunteers to caretake sessions that we cannot cover. If you would be interested in helping out please contact us.

Barry, now you see him, now you don’t.

Leaving the best for last, we have to mention the intrepid band of residents and EWCA volunteers who teamed up over the bank holiday weekend to seriously dent the gardening around the building. There was jet washing, weed pulling, tree trimming, fence repairs, weed pulling, skip diving, and weed pulling… The Beast put in an appearance too, making short work of the grassy areas, with more than a little help from Colin and Mike 😉 Barry, our omnipotent gardening overseer, was extremely happy with the progress and would love to add members to his gardening crew. So if you can spare an hour here and there please get in touch.

Coming to events like the Summer Solstice Fundraiser is just one way to support the journey back to life for The Wells Community Centre. Over the next few months more hirers will begin to offer classes and we will be able to announce what these will be in the next few weeks.

The next phase is to apply for funding to the National Lottery to replace the failing heating system and remodel the lounge into a coffee shop. We are also hoping this work will include the installation of a lift between the floors and a revamp of the playground too.
